Portugal has claimed the number two spot in a new ranking of the world’s top wine tourism destinations, highlighting its growing international profile as both an accessible and immersive destination for wine lovers.
According to a recent study by Titan Travel agency in Britain, the country scored 7.75 out of 10, outpacing heavyweight wine nations like Italy (7.00), France, and Spain.
The study assessed countries across four key indicators: average bottle price, the density of wine tours, average cost of a vineyard tasting, and global Google search interest. And Portugal has shown the highest density of wine tours globally, with 6.1 per 1,000 square kilometres, totaling 562 nationwide. Titan’s data also placed Portugal third in global search volume for wine-related tourism, with over 14,000 online searches for wine tours between April 2024 and March 2025.
Wine tours in Portugal often offer more than the standard cellar walk. Many include harvest participation, grape stomping in traditional granite “lagares,” and in-depth tastings led by local winemakers. According to Phil Elis, a destination expert at Titan Travel, wine tourism is becoming a major force in global travel habits. “More and more travellers are seeking out immersive, sensory experiences that connect them to local culture, and wine tasting delivers just that,” he says. “It offers a unique window into a region’s heritage, climate, and character.”
Portugal’s appeal is further bolstered by affordability. Though not the absolute cheapest (South Africa took that crown), wine remains far more budget-friendly than in France (or the UK, for that matter). The country offers a sweet spot where authenticity, cost, and accessibility intersect—a crucial factor for tourists who want to feel immersed without breaking the bank.
