Saravá Loureiro: the raw Verde by Miguel and Leli
You won’t find the name of Vinho Verde on the back label of this one—as an IVV wine, it skips the regional tasting board and stylistic limitations to winemaking freedoms of the family team. The electric tension and purity of this Loureiro speaks for itself.
Saravá wines are a result of the efforts of Miguel Viseu and Leli Antunes, two figures deeply rooted in the “new wave” of Portuguese winemaking and viticulture operating under their company, Galactic Wines. Miguel, an experienced winemaker known for his work at biodynamic Aphros Wines, and Leli, a journalist and viticulturist, share a philosophy grounded in low-intervention practices. Their partnership is defined by a desire to strip away industrial artifice, focusing instead on the energy of the vineyard and the transmission of a specific “vibe”—a concept often associated with the word Saravá, a greeting used in Afro-Brazilian traditions to evoke positive energy and blessing.
The winemaking for Saravá Loureiro is a complex exercise in multi-vessel maturation designed to layer texture and tension.
The breakdown consists of 65% fermentation and aging in stainless steel to preserve the variety’s primary fruit and high-toned acidity. This is balanced by 30% fermentation and aging in 300L chestnut barrels, a traditional Portuguese wood that adds a rustic, savory breadth without the vanilla sweetness of oak. The final 5% is aged in clay tinajas (amphorae) for oxygen exchange, and 5% in raw granite, anchoring the wine to the geological identity of the Minho region.
The wine happily departs from the stereotypical, highly aromatic “fruit-bomb” style of commercial Vinho Verde
Instead, it offers a lean, electric acidity and a distinct saline minerality. The flavor profile features notes of green apple, citrus zest, and wet stone, complemented by a subtle floral lift characteristic of the Loureiro variety. Its texture is slightly more expansive than expected for its ABV of 11%, thanks to the lees contact, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and deeply savory, with a bone-dry finish.
Verdict
A lean, electric, energizing white for those who appreciates the details and elusive flavors
